The Role of Strong Policy in Reducing Food Loss and Waste | Food Bank Leadership Institute 2023

Supportive laws and policies are a crucial part of enabling food donation to reach its full impact. However, confusing date labels lead to food being wasted unnecessarily, tax laws fail to incentivize companies to donate surplus food, and a lack of donor liability protection makes companies nervous to donate food. Fortunately, many countries are in the process of reforming their laws around food donation to align better with their food security and climate goals.

In partnership with the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic, these sessions draw on the work completed to date in The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas project and take a closer look at the role of policy and showcase positive examples of change.
